The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria
Treasures and Locations of the Bavarian State Painting Collections
The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria comprise the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek, and the Pinakothek der Moderne that, together, house an extensive collection of art from the old masters to the twenty-first century. Visitors come from all corners of the globe to view the Pinakothek’s Bavarian State Painting Collections. But, in addition to the many paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and installation art housed within the three museums, art from the Pinakothek, including some of the collection’s most important hidden treasures, is also on display in nineteen galleries beyond the region’s boundaries.
The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria is the first book to take readers through all nineteen galleries that showcase the Bavarian State Painting Collections more broadly, from the Schleissheim Palace in Oberschleissheim, with paintings by Nicolas Poussin, to St. Catherine’s Church at Augsburg, which features works by Hans Holbein, to a gallery in Neuburg an der Donau that holds works by Peter Paul Rubens. Traveling with the director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Bernhard Maaz, we are treated to works of breathtaking beauty and historical significance by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Max Beckmann, Joseph Beuys, Albrecht Dürer, Paul Klee, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Auguste Rodin, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol, among many others. But the book also draws attention to the galleries themselves, including the finest castles and palaces of Bavaria.
With more than one hundred color illustrations and contributions by Pinakothek keepers and curators, the book sheds light on this internationally renowned collection.
