Sherrie Nickol

Chrysalis

With Essays by Richard Grosbard and Andrea Meislin

Gathers the earliest photographs of Sherrie Nickol, made in the late 1970s and largely unseen until now.

Sherrie Nickol: Chrysalis brings together, for the first time, the earliest photographs of Sherrie Nickol, work made in the late 1970s that has remained largely unseen for nearly half a century. Shot on film in natural light, the book offers a sustained study of young women, photographed primarily in Cincinnati, where Nickol was a college student, capturing her subjects in bedrooms, hallways, staircases, and window light, in states of reverie, intimacy, and quiet self-possession. Alongside these portraits, Nickol turns her lens on the streets, landscapes, and communities of the American South where she grew up, documenting Osceola, Arkansas, the Mississippi Delta, and New Orleans.

The title speaks to everything the book contains: a protected space of becoming, of identity not yet fixed, of transition held gently in suspension. Shot entirely on film and in natural light, with the characteristic black borders that connect Nickol to an earlier generation of photographers, these pictures ask what it means to be young and female at a particular moment in American life.

Reviews

"What strikes you most is how unguarded the subjects are. The women weren’t posing for a fashion shoot or a press photographer. They were simply reading, thinking, looking out of windows, or looking directly into the camera. . . The title, Chrysalis, says it all. In the words of the publisher, it speaks to "a protected space of becoming, of identity not yet fixed, of transition held gently in suspension". These are pictures of young women on the cusp of something, made by a young woman who was herself still finding her way too."

Digital Camera World

“Intimate portraits of young women and documentary photographs of the American South are brought together in a new book, Chrysalis, published by Hirmer Verlag. The images made when Nickol was still finding her path as a photographer, offer a compelling glimpse of a photographer discovering how they wanted to interpret the world. . . Chrysalis is a book that captures transition. Nickol is at the beginning of her journey photographing women at a point in their lives when identity is still taking shape. The images reveal not only the people in front of the camera but also ‘the emergence of a photographer’s way of seeing,’ as Andrea Meislin writes in an accompanying essay for Chrysalis.”
